| Borgie Hermida, SBC, NCAA Press Corps Player of the Week (16) NCAA Press Release, Thu, Oct 15, 2009 To shine in a team loaded with stars, one must have extraordinary guts and skills. Count talent too. Borgie Hermida proved he possesses all these traits as he stole the spotlight from his more celebrated teammates by powering the defending champion San Beda College to a thrilling 71-65 win over San Sebastian last Wednesday. The 5-foot-9 playmaker dished out his best game so far, pumping in 18 points, including a pressure-packed free throw in the dying seconds which proved to be the spark San Beda needed to finally take the sting out of the gritty Stags. The Stags were actually on the verge of overhauling an eight-point deficit in the final quarter and had it not been for Hermida's free throw that gave the Lions a commanding 69-65 lead with 19.1 seconds, the outcome could have changed. The win did not only allow the Lions to topple the Stags from the No. 1 spot, but more importantly it paved the way for San Beda to finish the double round eliminations on top for the third straight season. And to give credit to his outstanding performance, Hermida, who is coming off an operation from an ACL injury, is aptly named the NCAA Press Corps Accel/FilOil Flying V Player of the Week. “I’m glad that he (Hermida) stepped up in game that is so important for us. He knew how important this game is,” said SBC mentor Frankie Lim said of Hermida, who also had six points in the fourth frame. “We take pride in being No. 1.” Lim said Hermida’s court general ship will be needed more than ever especially this time that the Red Lions will be facing the fourth-ranked Letran in the Final Four starting today. “We will need his exploits in this kind of big games especially that there are rookies in our team. His leadership will really count,” Lim said. Hermida topped the weekly plum given by a group sports scribes from the country's leading broadsheets and tabloids covering the beat. |
