| Vergel Meneses to Coach for JRU Bombers NCAA Press Release, Wed, Nov 4, 2009 The Jose Rizal Bombers are reportedly tapping alumnus Vergel Meneses to replace Ariel Vanguardia as their new coach. Meneses, known in the pros as “The Arial Voyager” for his high-wire act, is reportedly taking over as coach with hopes of helping the Kalentong-based school end a 37-year title drought, according to sources. The former PBA all-star, who was one of Burger King coach Allan Gregorio’s assistants in the PBA early this year, will reportedly make his coaching tenure at his alma mater official when he signs a contract tomorrow. Vanguardia took over from Cris Calilan just a week before the 2005 NCAA basketball season opened and steered the Bombers to a Final Four finish a year later. From there, Jose Rizal went on land a seat in the finals where it came a win close of unseating the then reigning titlist San Beda and handing the former its first title since going all the way in 1972. This season, Vanguardia and the Bombers failed to even make it to the finals after dropping their winner-take-all match with the Stags, who went on to sweep the Lions in one of the most improbable title conquests in league history. |
