ACL injury ends Rey Guevarra's NCAA career
NCAA Press Release, Wed, Oct 7, 2009

Letran’s title bid suffered a snag after its talented wingman Rey Guevarra tore his anterior cruciate ligament that would sidelines him the rest of the 85th NCAA basketball tournament.

The high-leaping Guevarra sustained the season-ending injury after a bad fall in a collision with San Beda’s American behemoth Sudan Daniel in a 64-76 loss Friday, or in the Knights last elimination round game.

It also turned out Guevarra’s last appearance for the Muralla-based school.

“It’s sad losing him like that,” said Letran coach Louie Alas of Guevarra, who came in crutches in practice to encourage the players who would take his spot to play harder.

The loss of Guevarra, who played for four seasons, would mean the Knights would have one weapon less and more responsibility for team captain and fellow Smart Gilas Pilipinas veteran RJ Jazul when they take on the No. 1 seed in the Final Four.

“The team’s morale is low the past few days but I expect them to regain their bearing tomorrow (today) when we go all out in practice in preparation for the Final Four,” said Alas.

Guevarra, who was part of Letran's last champion team four seasons back, however, went out with guns ablaze as he averaged his NCAA best 15.7 points in a season after he made it to the Smart Gilas Pilipinas team coached by Serbian Rajko Toroman.

Guevarra was also slam dunk champion in the Adidas 3-on-3 twice (2004 and 2005), in the Bantay Bata UAAP-NCAA All-Star (2005 and 2007) and in the PBL Unity Cup (2006).
